It’s hard to write a case review unless the company is offering some high-technology differentiation for drop protection or waterproofing. Other than that, a case is just a case. But Carved challenges the notion of phone-case-as-commodity by placing a thin slice of wood and resin on the back of each case, creating an absolutely one-of-a-kind piece of art to encase your Apple or Samsung Galaxy phone.

The case is made of Thermoplastic Polyurethane or TPU, a flexible rubber alternative that absorbs the impact of falls. A recessed pocket at the corner enhances the drop protection. The TPU covers all the corners and sits slightly above the phone’s display to protect it from tiny objects on desks and tables. A lip also extrudes from the camera area, helping protect the lenses from scratches. The case also covers the buttons but leaves them with a mechanical feel.

For Apple products, the case is also MagSafe compatible.
