iPhone 16 Pro Cases First Looks: New Mujjo Cases and Casetify Cases
The first round of iPhone 16 Pro cases have arrived, and they continue to evolve along with Apple’s phones. While Casetify offers colorful, branded cases with bumpers and built-in stands, Mujjo delivers elegant, understated leather cases. They both offer support for the latest features, such as the action button and the camera button.
This post gives but a glimpse of the variety of cases available, but it offers a sense of how cases have gone from protection to accessories and statement pieces.
Casetify Cases
Casetify’s cool ends with their cases, but it doesn’t start there. The shopping experience is pretty unique. Given that their cases are made to order, each case design comes in a variety of styles. The $88 Mickey & Friends Medley Case, for instance, arrived with an impact ring stand (6.6 feet of drop protection). It is rated as strong and middle of the pack in weight. The Spider-man ultra bounce case (21.3-foot drop protection), on the other hand, is also a middle-weight case, but it offers extreme protection. The impact version is light and strong (8.2 feet of drop protection), while the mirror version provides 4.9 feet of drop protection.
Casetify cases range to the high-end of case pricing, starting at $72 for the essential Mickey and Friends and running up to $102 for the ultra bounce. The Spider-Man ultra bounce version runs $82, likely because it only has one licensed image. Unlike many cases sold on Amazon, Casetify products are not regularly on sale.
Casetify also offers a range of phone case enhancements, including straps and charms, as well as MagSafe accessories.
Mujjo Cases
Mujjo’s leather cases are elegant and understated. I like this kind of case for formal events. I also find them a fun platform for enhancement with stickers and decals, though that is the opposite of elegant and understated, and I’m sure not what the leather crafters at Mujjo intended.
The Dark Tan leather case is made of fine-grain Danish calfskin. The full-grain calfskin on the Shield Case comes from the Netherlands. The interior is lined with Japanese microfibre. The Shield case’s ImpactCore tech is certified military grade MIL-STD-810 for drops up to 15 feet. Raised bezels keep the phone and the camera protected.
Sustainability
Unfortunately, the sustainability profiles of the two case manufacturers could not be further apart. Mujjo is a gold-rated leather working group (LWG), certified B corporation, while Casetify continues to use some new plastics across their cases and packaging. They do use recycled plastic sheets to cover glossy surfaces, but I would rather see them eliminated, as it isn’t clear that they can be recycled again.
Mujjo’s paper insert that holds the case is a much better choice than Casetify’s recyclable plastic insert. The less plastic, recycled, recyclable or not, the better. I had to tear apart the Casetify box for recycling, removing the plastic window and the hang tag. The Mujjo box was completely recyclable without any deconstruction.
Mujjo offers a good example of what can be done with thoughtful design. Its DriTan leather tanning technology requires no water. The buttons and the inner shell are made of recycled materials. And the box is the epitome of sustainability, with its 100% recycled paper construction. No tape. No hang tag.
Mujjo and Casetify: The bottom line
Cases are personal and situational. I find that one case never suffices. I want cases that fit the moment, whether that is a trip to Disneyland, a weekend at a Comic Con, a wedding, or just a day with the grandchildren. Mujjo and Casetify demonstrate the extremes of the mobile device market. Somewhere between glossy plastic and refined leather, every buyer will find a case or cases that fit their moments.
