Mophie Speedport 120 GaN fast charger®
Summary
An excellent 4-port, 120W GaN charger that eliminates the issue of the charge block falling out of the wall with a cord.
Zagg’s Mophie Speedport 120 GaN fast charger® Review
A charger is a block of plastic and metal that transforms wall current into current consumable by a device. It turns 220v or 110v into smaller bites that won’t fry delicate circuitry. The bigger the main voltage on a power supply, the bigger the power supply. 240W power supplies often weigh as much as an average laptop—not the ones they power, as those are usually huge laptops often with heft memory, high-end CPUs, and often dedicated GPUs.
The development of Galium Nitride or GaN technology delivers more voltage through a smaller charger. That results in smaller power blocks that can do more.
Zagg’s Mophie Speedport 120W GaN fast charger® does exactly what its name says: it delivers 120 watts of total power distributed over four ports, two 100W USB-C ports, a 20W USB-C port and a 12W USB Type-A port.
And that’s about all you need to know, save for the small white light that indicates power surging through the brick.
The 3.15×3.15×1.4-inch white or black case places all the ports on the front. The back hides Mophie’s competitive differentiator.
Unlike the other GaN chargers reviewed by Serious Insights, Mophie’s Speedport 120 does not fall out of wall sockets because the brick doesn’t plug directly into the socket. Mophie cleverly includes a power cable that not only frees outlet space but allows for a much more flexible charging cable configuration. Owners can easily bring the Speedport 120 to the device instead of getting closer to the outlet to accommodate bricks that need to hug a plug.
The white version is currently on Apple.com, and the black version is available via Zagg’s website.
Zagg’s Mophie Speedport 120 GaN fast charger®: The Bottom Line
If you need an endorsement better than mine, Apple sells the Mophie Speedport 120 at Apple.com as a legitimate multi-device alternative to Apple chargers. Not every accessory made for Apple products appears in Apple’s store, only a select few.
But keep in mind that the Mophie Speedport 120 isn’t just an Apple product. It also supports PCs, Android devices and any number of other power-starved USB-charged devices.
The Speedport’s 4 ports make it an ideal travel charger. It is heavier than many individual travel chargers, but travelers will only need to bring one charger to deliver power to all their devices.
