Scosche MagicMount Flask
Summary
The Scosche MagicMount Flask is a 32-ounce double-walled stainless steel water bottle with a MagSafe lid. I know. But it’s real and it works. A 22-ounce version is also available.
Scosche MagicMount Flask Review
Sometimes, there are just ideas that somehow bloom into the mind of an engineer or a product manager that don’t seem directly aligned with market need or the company’s niche. And sometimes those products turn out to be cool and wacky one-offs among a portfolio of perfectly practical offerings. The Scosche MagicMount Flask is just such a product. A MagSafe water bottle that includes a cup for keeping a pooch, a ferret or even a miniature pig hydrated on a trip or just a walk.
So, first off, MagicMount™ Flask runs $59.99. Expensive for a water bottle, but of course, there are more expensive ones out there. Most Stanley’s, however, are less expensive, but they don’t come with MagSafe. A 22-ounce version costs $54.99.
But let’s talk liquids first. The double-wall insulated stainless steel BPA-free flask holds 32 ounces of liquid. It will keep a cold drink cold for 24 hours and a warm drink warm for 12.
It comes with a handle and an anti-slip silicon base. The removable base doubles as a pet watering bowl.
For humans, liquid comes out of a pop-up “straw” and then extends to the bottom of the bottle.
Of course, the several-ounce gorilla on the bottle is the MagSafe-compatible magnet attached to the handle. It contains some serious Rare-Earth Neodymium magnets that hold a phone at a continuum of angles for well…
…So, what are the use cases? Well, more than I would have thought. Recipes at the stove, video calls on the road, a “tripod” for the top of a desk, or just keeping a phone handy when on exercise equipment. Chances are people will be less likely to forget their water bottle and their phone at the gym than just one or the other.
The bottle supports MagSafe for all the Apple iPhones that use MagSafe charging (Apple iPhone 15/14/13/12 Pro, Pro Max, Plus, Mini). It ships with a magnetic ring to make it compatible with Android or other devices. When the bottle is full, it will support up to 3.5 lbs. And it appears that if you don’t feel like just setting your bottle down, you can find a nice piece of steel nearby and magnetically adhere the bottle to the steel desk, column or whatever handy magnetic surface that’s within reach.
And because it’s a bottle, it rotates 360 degrees without loosening or tightening screws.
Yes, it’s a bit of a wacky product, but Schosche backs it with a lifetime warranty.
I’m looking forward to a utility bottle while trekking through the halls and corridors of San Diego Comic-Con in a few weeks. Maybe I will be able to come to the rescue of a thirsty Ewok.
So, what are the drawbacks of the Scosche MagicMount Flask? The 32-ounce version is much too wide for most backpack water bottle mesh pockets. I have not tried the slimmer 22-ounce version, but I’m guessing it will fit more backpacks with the tradeoff of ten ounces of liquid.
I’d also like to see Scosche, one of the leaders in charging technology, put a battery in the lid so the phone can charge when mounted (though I’m sure that crossed the mind of the inventor, who probably had some concerns about liquid and electricity in such close proximity). I bet there is a solution to the challenge, like a reverse polarity magnetic charger that only has magnetic features when plugged in, which could attach to the MagSafe mount and charge a battery through it. Just a wild thought to add to the mix.
Scosche MagicMount Flask Review: The bottom line
When one thinks about the idea of utility, water bottles rank pretty high up the list of things with “utility.” That a water bottle doubles as a MagSafe stand makes it utility squared. Add a bowl for hydrating pets: off the charts utility. That’s utility cubed.
