San Diego Comic-Con was not that hot, but it was hot enough that I wanted to be cooler. I brought my $199 Torras Coolify 2S, determined to master personal air conditioning and to master the device. I think I accomplished both goals.

As wearable technology continues to blur the lines between utility and luxury, the Torras Coolify 2S offers a compelling option for those who demand climate control in a compact form. Whether you’re dealing with intense summer heat or biting winter cold, this neck air conditioner offers an innovative solution to keep you comfortable.

In San Diego, I was all about the cool. But a lesson learned: don’t push the button without looking at the resulting setting. At one point, I turned on the heat in the sun and let’s just say I thought the Coolify 2S was broken. It wasn’t—it was just acting as a personal head sauna when I should have been blowing cool air up into my face.

The Coolify 2S wraps around the neck. Its unique flexible connector ends in two rigid sections that house the internal fans and contact plates that cool or heat. The device is simple to operate, with three modes—fan, cooling, and heating—that you can toggle through with a single button or a smartphone app. The app offers more granular control, allowing you to adjust fan speeds and monitor battery levels more intuitively.

The cooling mode, driven by a semiconductor chip, effectively cools the contact plates and circulates cool air through several vents. The fan mode is a straightforward option for those who need a light breeze, while the heating mode turns the device into a personal warmer, ideal for cold mornings.

And once I mastered that cooling mode, I kept with it. I started with the intention of only using it outside between venues. I quickly remembered that the exhibit floor is pretty toasty, too (Comic-Con is a bit like having a baby; one forgets any unpleasantries between occurrences).

In the end, The Torra COOLiFY 2S became my constant companion on the nerdy streets of San Diego, even though it added considerable bulk to the contents of my backpack.

The long battery life is impressive, lasting up to 28 hours on a single charge, and when it’s time to recharge, the device gets back to 100% in just 2.5 hours.

How Torras Coolify 2S works

Cooling Functionality:

• The Coolify 2S utilizes a semiconductor cooling chip that rapidly cools two contact plates that rest against the back of your neck. This technology works similarly to how a refrigerator cools, by absorbing heat and then transferring it away from the body. When in cooling mode, these plates chill almost instantly, providing a refreshing sensation directly to your skin.
• Additionally, the device has built-in fans that draw air through vents and circulate it across the cooled plates. This dual action—cooling the skin directly through the plates and enhancing the effect with airflow—creates a cooling environment around your neck and head, significantly lowering perceived body temperature.

Heating Functionality:

• In heating mode, the Coolify 2S reverses the cooling process. The semiconductor chip heats the contact plates, providing warmth to your neck. The fans are deactivated in this mode to prevent dispersing the heat away from the body. This feature is particularly useful during colder seasons when you need localized warmth without the need for bulky clothing or external heaters.

Fan Mode:

• The fan mode operates independently of the cooling plates, simply blowing air across your neck. This mode helps to evaporate sweat and provides a cooling breeze, which can be enough to keep you comfortable in moderately warm conditions without engaging the full cooling mode.

Control and Operation:

• The device can be controlled either through physical buttons or a smartphone app. The app provides additional control over the fan speeds and modes, allowing owners to fine-tune the device. The Coolify 2S is powered by a 5000mAh battery, offering up to 28 hours of operation depending on usage settings, and can be recharged in about 2.5 hours via USB-C.

This combination of cooling, heating, and airflow, all in a wearable form factor, makes the Torras Coolify 2S an innovative solution for personal temperature regulation.

As I walked around San Diego Comic-Con, I saw a lot of people with neck fans. I didn’t see any with portable air conditioners. I think this is a market that will grow as heat becomes a bigger issue. Moving air along won’t cut it.

At $199, the COOLiFY 2S is much more expensive than a personal fan. But it’s also cooler, and well, cooler. Price will be a barrier for many, especially when compared to those less expensive breeze blowing alternatives. That said, those units don’t cool, they just redirect air.

While the fan is generally quiet, the audible noise at higher settings can be distracting, especially when trying to listen to a presentation. At Comic-Con, there is no judgement about what people wear, well, anywhere. My Torras COOLiFY 2S was a mild cybernetic addition compared to going full Robocop.

Keep in mind, that despite its innovative design, the Coolify 2S only offers limited cooling capacity, from the neck up. It makes you feel better, but it’s not going to stop arm pits from sweating.

The .9-pound, 7.6″D x 6.1″W x 2.1″H unit takes up some space and adds weight. I didn’t wear it all of the time, especially when the battery was low, and it needed some power bank love.

Battery life can go some time, with just the fan on or at low cool. I found it less than satisfying at peak heat when it stopped working. Probably more my fault than the manufacturer’s fault, but turning up the cool greatly decreases battery longevity, reducing it to much closer to the 3-hour range. So, if you are thinking Disneyland on a hot day, it will work, but when it’s in the backpack, connect it to a Fast Charge capable power bank to keep the unit battery topped off.

My wife is, well, let’s say, 5-feet tall. She does not have a long neck. The Torras COOLiFY 2S takes up significantly more of her neck than it does mine. She likes the cooling but would prefer a solution with a smaller circumference.

And Torras COOLiFY 2S looks like it’s from the future, so if you get one, find a way to integrate it into your cosplay. Star Trek fans have it easy enough. Just add a delta shield sticker or two and you’re good to go.
